Nikwax vs Grangers: Complete Comparison of DWR and Cleaning Products

In-depth side-by-side comparison of Nikwax and Grangers aftermarket DWR treatments, tech washes, and down cleaners. Covers TX.Direct vs Performance Repel, Tech Wash vs Performance Wash, and real-world durability testing results.

Published January 15, 2025

Introduction

Nikwax and Grangers are the two dominant brands in aftermarket outdoor gear care. Walk into any REI, MEC, or Cotswold Outdoor and the shelf will be roughly evenly split between the two. Both are based in the UK. Both began in the 1970s. Both have PFC-free product lines. Both are recommended by Gore-Tex, eVent, and most major outdoor brands.

But they are not identical products. The formulations differ. The application methods differ slightly. The durability and water repellency performance are close but not the same, with one brand performing better on certain fabrics and in certain conditions.

This comparison is based on product chemistry, manufacturer specifications, user reports from long-term testing, and an independent test conducted by UK Climbing magazine in 2022 that measured spray ratings and wash durability on standard nylon taffeta swatches.

The Product Lines Compared

Tech Washes (Cleaners)

FeatureNikwax Tech WashGrangers Performance Wash

Price per 300ml~$12 USD~$12 USD

Nikwax Tech Wash and Grangers Performance Wash are functionally equivalent for most users. Both are water-based, surfactant-only cleaners with no fabric softener, no bleach, no optical brighteners. In blind testing (washing identical Gore-Tex jackets and assessing them for residue by water beading tests afterward), the two products are indistinguishable.

The one difference some users report: Grangers Performance Wash produces slightly less foam in hard water conditions. If your household water is hard (high mineral content), Grangers may rinse clean with a single extra rinse where Nikwax sometimes requires two. This is a marginal difference.

Wash-In DWR Treatments

In the UK Climbing spray rating test, both products achieved an initial spray rating of 90 out of 100 on nylon taffeta, which is equivalent to a factory DWR application. After 5 wash cycles, the Nikwax-treated fabric dropped to a spray rating of 80, while the Grangers-treated fabric held at 85. After 10 wash cycles, Nikwax was at 70 and Grangers at 75.

The difference is real -- Grangers Performance Repel has approximately 5 to 8 percent better wash durability -- but small enough that most users will not notice it in practice. Both products are re-applied long before 10 wash cycles pass.

Spray-On DWR Treatments

The spray-on products from both brands perform similarly to their wash-in counterparts. The main difference is in the spray nozzle: Nikwax uses a finer mist nozzle, which provides more even coverage but takes slightly longer to apply. Grangers uses a wider pattern spray head that covers area faster but produces larger droplets that can saturate a single spot if you move too slowly.

Down Cleaners

FeatureNikwax Down Wash DirectGrangers Down Wash
Active ingredientWater-based cleaner + light DWRWater-based cleaner
ResidueMinimal when rinsedMinimal when rinsed
Water-repellent additiveYes (light DWR)No

This is where the products diverge most significantly. Nikwax Down Wash Direct includes a light water-repellent additive that coats the down clusters during the wash. The intent is that down with a hydrophobic treatment will resist absorbing moisture during use, maintaining loft even in humid conditions (hydrophobic down is a category of its own, sold by brands like Allied Feather and Down Decor).

Grangers Down Wash is a pure cleaner with no water-repellent additive. If you are washing a hydrophobic down bag (one that was originally treated with a water-resistant coating from the down supplier), Grangers Down Wash will not add new repellency but also will not strip the existing treatment. Nikwax Down Wash Direct will add repellency, but opinions differ on whether applying DWR treatment to down clusters inside a sleeping bag is truly beneficial or just a marketing feature. Hydrophobic down treatments on the down itself are real and measurable; they add roughly 10 to 15 percent loft retention in damp conditions. Whether a single wash cycle with Nikwax Down Wash Direct reproduces a factory hydrophobic down treatment is less clear.

Durability on Different Fabrics

Both brands perform better on nylon face fabrics than on polyester. The DWR polymer bonds more effectively to nylon's amide groups than to polyester's ester groups. This is true across both brands.

On 40-denier nylon (typical of midweight hardshell jackets like the Patagonia Torrentshell or Arc'teryx Beta LT), both products perform equivalently with no measurable difference in initial repellency or durability.

On 70-denier nylon (heavier shells like the Arc'teryx Alpha SV or Norrona Trollveggen), Grangers showed a small durability advantage, likely because its polymer formulation penetrates deeper into the thicker yarn bundles.

On polyester face fabrics (common in budget rain jackets and some ultralight tents), Nikwax's initial repellency was slightly higher (by roughly 5 spray rating points), likely because its elastomeric polymer has better wetting on polyester fibers.

Environmental Considerations

Both brands eliminated long-chain perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) from their products ahead of most regulatory deadlines. Both are Bluesign-approved. Both are packaged in recycled plastic bottles (Nikwax uses 100 percent post-consumer recycled HDPE; Grangers uses a mix of recycled and virgin plastic, transitioning to fully recycled).

Nikwax claims their products are water-based and avoid all organic solvents entirely. Grangers products are also water-based. Both are safe for septic systems and can be used in front-loading washing machines without leaving residue that builds up in the machine's plumbing.

Nikwax does not test on animals. Grangers' parent company (Pittards, known for leather goods) does not test cleaning products on animals, but Pittards sources leather from animals raised for food. This distinction matters to some consumers.

Price and Availability

Both are priced within 5 to 10 percent of each other across the product line. Nikwax is slightly more available in North American retailers (REI carries the full line). Grangers is slightly more available in the UK and Europe (Cotswold Outdoor carries the full line). Both are available on Amazon globally.

The Bottom Line: Which Should You Choose?

For most users, the choice between Nikwax and Grangers comes down to availability and personal preference. The performance differences are small and within the range of variation you would get from water hardness, washing machine differences, and application thoroughness.

If you can only stock one brand, and you are a:

  • Gore-Tex jacket owner: Either brand. Performance is equivalent.
  • Down sleeping bag owner: Nikwax Down Wash Direct for the added hydrophobic treatment, unless you prefer to avoid adding any treatment to the down and want a pure cleaner.
  • Ski jacket or 70D+ shell owner: Grangers Performance Repel has a slight edge in durability on heavier fabrics.
  • Polyester rain jacket owner: Nikwax TX.Direct has a slight edge in initial repellency on polyester face fabrics.
  • Eco-conscious buyer: Nikwax has a slight edge in packaging (100 percent recycled bottles) and chemical transparency.

The most important factor in DWR performance is not Nikwax vs. Grangers. It is whether you clean the jacket thoroughly before applying DWR, whether you apply the product evenly, and whether you heat-activate it afterward. A properly applied budget DWR product will outperform a poorly applied premium product every time.
